Appendix B: Central Thesis of the Comparative Approach

The evidence supports three conclusions simultaneously:

  1. Religions share recurring forms of human religious life.
  2. Religions genuinely influence one another through historical contact.
  3. Religious traditions remain doctrinally and philosophically distinctive even when rituals or social institutions resemble one another.

A serious history of Sanatan Dharma should hold all three propositions together.
